I'm building a new AM5 gaming PC and choosing between two motherboards: one costs about $160 and the other around $260. Both support my CPU and RAM and include the M.2 slots, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi‑Fi, and USB connectivity I need. The pricier model has stronger VRMs, larger heatsinks, more rear I/O, and a nicer appearance, but I don't plan to manually overclock anything. If the cheaper board can run my processor at stock speeds without throttling, what practical benefits would the extra $100 provide? Could it improve longevity, memory stability, or future upgrade options, or would the money be better spent on a faster GPU or more storage? Where do you draw the line between a sensible midrange board and one that is simply overbuilt?

If the less expensive board has decent VRMs, no known BIOS or stability problems, and includes all the connections you need, it should be perfectly adequate. At around $150–$160, you're generally already looking at solid midrange boards rather than dangerously cheap hardware. The more expensive model mainly buys extra I/O, stronger expansion support, aesthetics, and more headroom—not automatically better gaming performance.
The real cutoff is whether the cheaper board avoids obvious compromises: only two memory slots, weak power delivery, poor firmware support, missing Wi‑Fi or networking, inadequate rear I/O, or a layout that blocks the ports you need. If it clears those checks and supports your processor properly, choosing it isn't cutting corners. Paying extra for a nicer-looking board is fine, but treat that as an aesthetic purchase rather than a performance upgrade.
Check the expansion details before deciding. Some chipsets or board layouts share PCIe lanes between M.2 slots, SATA ports, and add-in cards. If you're only using one graphics card and a couple of SSDs, that probably won't matter. If you expect several NVMe drives, capture cards, sound cards, or other peripherals, the pricier board's additional lanes and I/O could be useful.
VRM quality matters most when paired with a demanding processor. Better VRMs run cooler and leave more room for sustained boost behavior or a future CPU upgrade, but they don't usually make a noticeable difference at stock settings if the cheaper board already passes reviews without throttling. Extra heatsinks and premium components may help longevity, but they aren't worth $100 by themselves for a normal gaming build.
Manual overclocking isn't a major reason to spend more on AM5 anyway. Features such as PBO and memory tuning are usually limited more by the CPU, cooling, and memory kit than by buying a premium motherboard. Unless the expensive model has a feature you specifically need—better USB connectivity, a useful debug display, more expansion, or a particular form factor—I’d put the savings toward the GPU or storage.
