I currently use a 22-inch 1080p monitor and want to upgrade mainly to get more workspace for browsing, documents, spreadsheets, and general work. I am happy gaming at 1080p and do not want to rely on upscaling if it makes the interface larger and reduces the extra workspace. I sit roughly 60 cm from the screen, and 27 inches is the largest size I can fit. Would text be comfortably readable and sharp at 4K on a 27-inch display? Would 1440p be a better compromise, or would 1080p look worse because it does not scale cleanly to 1440p? Finally, how acceptable does 1080p gaming look on a 4K monitor?

A 27-inch 4K monitor is excellent for work at that distance. Text and fine UI elements look very sharp, and you can use display scaling if the default text size feels too small. Depending on the scaling level, you may give up some workspace, but you can usually choose a setting that still provides more usable space than 1080p.

I sit around 60 cm away as well, and 27-inch 4K is comfortable for me. The text clarity is noticeably better than 1440p.
