I currently have a Cougar VTX 80 Plus Bronze 450W power supply, a Ryzen 7 5700X, 16GB of 3200MHz RAM, an RTX 3050 8GB, and both a hard drive and an SSD. I bought an RTX 5060 for high-settings 1080p gaming and am wondering whether I should upgrade to a 550W or 650W power supply. Since I may not be able to replace the PSU until next month, would it be safe to use the RTX 5060 temporarily with my current 450W unit? The power supply is about eight years old.

The RTX 5060 is a reasonable 1080p card and its relatively low power consumption suits your system. There’s no need to replace it with a much more expensive card just to solve this issue; focus on getting a modern, reliable PSU with the proper GPU power connector and protections.
The RTX 5060’s power draw is fairly modest, around 150W, and the 5700X is also relatively efficient, so the system may run on 450W in terms of raw wattage. However, an eight-year-old power supply is the bigger concern. I’d wait for the replacement rather than stress an aging unit, especially if it’s a budget model.
It might work, but I wouldn’t call it recommended. A good-quality 650W PSU would give you plenty of headroom for this build and future upgrades. You don’t really need 750W for a 5700X and RTX 5060 unless you want extra room later.

The GPU and CPU together don’t appear to exceed what a healthy 450W supply can handle, but total system draw can briefly spike, and older PSUs become less trustworthy over time. You could reduce CPU power with Eco Mode as a temporary precaution, but waiting a month for a new, reputable 650W unit is the safer choice.
That makes sense. I didn’t realize the age of the PSU was such an important factor, so I’ll probably wait.
