I'm looking to upgrade from an RTX 4060 to a used RTX 3080 Ti listed locally. The seller is letting me bring my PC and test the card before buying, but I currently have a 600W power supply. My system uses an i7-14700K and 64GB of DDR5 memory. Would it be safe to test the card thoroughly with my current PSU, or should I upgrade the power supply first? I'd like to check stability without risking crashes or hardware damage.

If you absolutely have to test it with the current PSU, avoid heavy stress tests like FurMark. A short normal gaming session or a moderate benchmark may work if the PSU is excellent, but that doesn’t prove the system is safe for regular use. With a 14700K, I’d consider 850W the sensible choice.
I wouldn’t run a 3080 Ti with a 600W unit, especially alongside an i7-14700K. These GPUs can have substantial transient power spikes, and your CPU can draw a lot under load. A high-quality 750W PSU is the practical minimum, while 850W gives you much more headroom. I’d upgrade before testing if possible.
The exact PSU model matters, but 600W is still uncomfortably low for this combination. Even a regular RTX 3080 can pull around 340W before transient spikes, and the Ti is more demanding. I’d look for a reputable 850W unit rather than relying on a brief test with the existing supply.
