I'm building a new PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, and I'm deciding between a 1440p and 4K monitor. Can this system handle modern games at 4K with high or ultra settings and playable frame rates? I'm also wondering whether running 1440p on a 4K monitor looks worse than running 1440p on a native 1440p display. Upgrading to an RTX 4090 or 5090 is probably outside my budget, so I'd prefer to choose the right monitor for the hardware I'm getting.

Running 1440p on a 4K monitor usually won’t look as sharp as native 1440p on a 1440p display, because 1440p does not scale evenly to a 4K pixel grid. However, you generally don’t need to do that: render the game at a lower internal resolution using DLSS while keeping the monitor output at 4K. If you care more about consistently high refresh rates and maximum settings over the next few years, 1440p—especially ultrawide—will give the 5070 Ti more headroom. Otherwise, 4K is a good fit if you value image quality.
A 4K monitor is a reasonable choice for this setup. DLSS generally looks better at 4K than it does at 1440p because the upscaler has more source pixels to work with. In many games, 4K with DLSS Quality or Balanced can look excellent while delivering much higher performance than native 4K.
Yes, the 5070 Ti can handle 4K very well, especially with DLSS. Most games should be comfortable at 4K with high or ultra settings, and newer or especially demanding titles may need DLSS Quality or Balanced to stay above 60 FPS. That makes sense. I was probably underestimating the card because I was thinking about maximum ray tracing settings in games like Cyberpunk.

I use a similar setup and usually switch between DLSS Quality and Balanced depending on the game. It has been enough for high frame rates without making the image look noticeably soft.
