Is a cheap i7-9700K worth it, or should I save for a full platform upgrade?

I'm trying to decide whether to spend about $200 on a Core i9-9900K for my existing system or save toward a newer platform, especially with DDR5 and graphics card prices being difficult to justify right now. I currently have a Core i5-8400F, an Asus Prime Z370-P motherboard, 32GB of ordinary DDR4, and two M.2 SSDs. My secondhand RTX 2070 has always had strange stability problems, and it also seems to be held back by the CPU.

A used Core i7-9700K is available locally for around $50, while a 9900K costs much more. The computer is mainly used for gaming, but I also compile sizable projects, do some game development, and expect to use it for video editing and creating graphics. The six-thread limit of the 8400F has already been noticeable for productivity work.

The alternatives are moving to a newer DDR4-based Intel platform, buying a used AM4 system, or jumping to a current platform such as AM5 or Intel's newer processors and paying for DDR5 as well. I'm mainly trying to avoid wasting money on an aging system while still getting a meaningful improvement. Would the inexpensive 9700K be a sensible stopgap, or is it better to save for a complete rebuild?

For about $50, the 9700K is the easiest recommendation. It’s a noticeable improvement over the 8400F and can extend the life of your current motherboard without committing much money. The 9900K is faster in multithreaded work, but the price premium is hard to justify when the 9700K is so much cheaper. Put the savings toward the eventual graphics card or full rebuild.

That’s where I’m leaning. If the 9700K still doesn’t feel sufficient, I can build a completely new system later and reuse this one as a living-room or emulation machine.

If you decide to replace the platform, a DDR4 motherboard with a 12th- or 13th-generation Intel CPU can sometimes be cheaper than buying into AM4 at current used prices. A 12600K or 14600K would offer a large improvement for gaming, compiling, and editing while letting you keep your existing memory. The newer platform will perform better, but you also need to budget for the board, cooler, and eventually a graphics card.

A used Ryzen 5 5600 with a B450 or B550 board is another sensible budget route. It’s around the level of a 9900K in many workloads and gives you a little more upgrade flexibility than staying on the old Z370 platform. A Ryzen 5 3600 would also be a substantial improvement over the 8400F if found very cheaply. I’d avoid paying a premium for an AM4 X3D setup, though; at that point, saving for AM5 makes more sense.

I wouldn’t pay $200 for a 9900K today. The 9700K is only a modest step behind it for most gaming, and the extra cache and Hyper-Threading don’t justify spending roughly $150 more in this situation. Just make sure the motherboard BIOS supports the chip and that your cooling is adequate.

The graphics card may ultimately provide the larger gaming upgrade, but replacing it before addressing the CPU could be frustrating if the 8400F is already limiting performance. I’d first verify whether the RTX 2070’s instability is caused by drivers, power delivery, temperatures, or the card itself. If the $50 9700K is genuine and compatible, it’s a low-risk way to remove much of the CPU bottleneck while you save for a better GPU and eventual rebuild.
