Is a Fully Modular Power Supply Worth the Extra Cost for a Gaming PC?

I'm putting together a new gaming PC and deciding between a fully modular and semi-modular power supply. The fully modular option costs a bit more, but I like the idea of connecting only the cables I actually need to keep the build cleaner. Aside from cable management, are there any meaningful advantages? For a typical gaming system, would you spend extra on fully modular, or is semi-modular good enough?

Focus on the PSU’s quality, wattage, protections, warranty, and efficiency before worrying about whether it’s fully modular. Fully modular models are often better because they’re commonly sold as higher-end units, but modularity itself doesn’t make the power supply electrically better. There are good semi-modular units too.

Case size matters a lot. In a compact ITX build, removable cables—and sometimes shorter custom cables—can make the difference between a clean build and a cramped one. In a larger case, unused cables can usually be tucked behind the motherboard tray, so semi-modular works well.

The main advantage is convenience, not performance. A fully modular unit lets you leave unused cables in the box, which makes building and cable management easier. It can also help in a small case or if you frequently swap components. For a normal-sized case, semi-modular is usually perfectly fine if it saves a reasonable amount of money.

I’d personally pay a small premium for fully modular—around $5–$15 if everything else is comparable. It keeps the case less cluttered and makes future upgrades or cable replacements easier. That said, most builds still use the motherboard cable and several other standard cables, so the practical difference from semi-modular isn’t huge.

That makes sense. I’m using a regular ATX case, so it sounds like semi-modular is enough unless the fully modular model is only slightly more expensive.
