I'm comparing Corsair SHIFT ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 power supplies. The RM850x and RM1000x SHIFT models appear to have a native 12V-2x6 socket rated for 600W, while the newer RM1200x seems to use a 12V-2x6 cable that connects to two standard 8-pin sockets on the PSU side. Are these setups essentially equivalent in stability and safety? My instinct is to choose the model with the native 12V-2x6 socket because it seems like the newer implementation, but I'd prefer a 1200W unit if the practical safety difference is negligible.

They’re broadly equivalent when the PSU and cable follow the ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 specifications. The main concern with 12VHPWR and 12V-2x6 connections is making sure the plug is fully inserted, the cable isn’t sharply bent near the connector, and the contacts aren’t damaged. A cable that terminates in two PSU-side 8-pin plugs isn’t automatically less safe—in fact, those established connectors may be mechanically more robust. Use only the cable supplied for that exact PSU model; don’t mix modular PSU cables.
In practice, the safety difference between the two arrangements is probably small. A native 12V-2x6 connection has one such connector at the PSU and one at the graphics card, while the split arrangement replaces the PSU-side connector with two familiar 8-pin plugs. Either setup can work reliably if installed correctly. If you actually want the extra capacity, choosing the 1200W model is reasonable; just confirm it includes enough suitable GPU cables and that the PSU has the required ATX 3.1 certification.
That helps. I was mainly worried that choosing the 1200W model meant giving up a major safety improvement, but it sounds like the capacity and cable quality matter more than whether the PSU-side connection is native.
The four smaller pins are sense or identification pins. They tell the graphics card and power supply what power level the cable is configured to support, but they aren’t temperature sensors and don’t prevent a connector from overheating. An approved dual-8-pin-to-12V-2x6 cable still communicates the appropriate power limit; it doesn’t simply bypass every safety feature. The important part is using the correct number of dedicated 8-pin connections and an in-spec cable.
