Is a Platinum 850W PSU Enough for a 9950X3D and RTX 5080, or Should I Go for 1000W?

I'm wondering if a Platinum 850W power supply will be sufficient for my setup, which includes a Ryzen 9 9950X3D CPU and an RTX 5080 GPU. Is there a significant downside to using the 850W model? Also, is the $30 difference to upgrade to a 1000W worth it?

The only real downside to an 850W PSU is that it might limit future upgrades. If you plan to get a higher-end GPU later, you might want to invest in a 1000W now to avoid the hassle of replacing it again.

I use a 5080 with a 9950X3D myself, and my peak power draw has never exceeded around 650W, including my monitor. That said, if youโ€™re really sure you won't upgrade to a beefier GPU, an 850W should suffice for now. Otherwise, I'd go for the 1000W just to be safe.

Given your needs, I would definitely recommend spending the extra $30 on a 1000W power supply. It's better to have that extra headroom, especially if you're planning on any upgrades down the line. You donโ€™t want to find yourself in a situation where 850W isn't enough.

Honestly, for just $30 more, the peace of mind that comes with a 1000W supply is worth every penny. If you've got to ask if 850W is enough, you might always be wondering. Just go for the 1000W.

An 850W power supply will work fine for most setups, but if youโ€™re overclocking, a 1000W would be more efficient. Since the total draw with your components is likely around 530W, youโ€™ll be operating at a decent load with 850W, but itโ€™s always better to have extra capacity. And remember, the PSU is critical for stability in high-performance systems!
