Is a Power-Limited RTX 5090 Better Than an RTX 5080 on a 900W UPS?

I'm building a high-end gaming PC for a 4K monitor, but it needs to stay within the limits of a typical APC 1500VA/900W UPS so it can ride through outages and shut down safely. A standard RTX 5080 should fit that power budget, while an RTX 5090 could potentially be configured around 70% power, retaining its 32GB of VRAM, with the CPU power-limited as well. Which would deliver better real-world 4K gaming performance: a normal RTX 5080 or a power-limited RTX 5090? The UPS is not optional, and I need it to provide roughly 2–3 minutes for a safe shutdown. My alternatives are either the 900W unit or a much larger 2200VA APC model that would need to be the main load on a dedicated 20A circuit.

The power-limited 5090 should still be faster than the 5080, especially at 4K. GPU performance usually doesn’t drop in direct proportion to the power limit, and the 5090’s wider memory bus and 32GB of VRAM can help with demanding games and higher-quality textures. The exact advantage depends on the power target and how much the card has to reduce clocks, but it should generally remain the stronger option.

That’s what I’m trying to determine. The 900W UPS is a hard limit because I need a few minutes of runtime for an orderly shutdown, so I’m looking for the best performance possible within that total system budget.

The UPS’s runtime matters just as much as its wattage rating. A 900W-capable unit may handle the peak load, but running close to its limit can reduce runtime and leave less margin for transient spikes. A power-limited and undervolted 5090 is probably the best-performance choice, but verify the actual wall draw under a combined CPU and GPU load and configure the system to shut down well before the battery is exhausted.

Don’t just rely on lowering the maximum power slider. A good undervolt can often preserve more performance per watt, while also reducing heat and transient spikes. You’d still need to power-limit the CPU and leave some UPS headroom for the motherboard, drives, fans, and monitor. Measure the finished system at the wall rather than assuming the GPU’s rated power is the whole load.

The UPS is required in this setup, not just a preference. A larger unit is possible, but it would be physically inconvenient and would require dedicating another high-current circuit, so the goal is to stay within the 900W model if practical.
