Is a previously opened XFX RX 9070 worth buying used?

I'm considering buying a used XFX RX 9070 Quicksilver for $560, but I noticed that the screws have been removed before. The seller says they only opened it to clean the card, yet they bought it less than a year ago, which makes me wonder why it needed to be disassembled so soon. This is my first used-GPU purchase, so should I test it thoroughly and consider the deal, or avoid it and wait for a card that hasn't been opened? Also, what should I check before buying?

The level of buyer protection matters a lot. If you’re buying through a marketplace with strong returns and buyer protection, the risk is lower. For a local cash sale with no way to test the card or recover your money, I’d trust your instincts and move on to another listing.

I’d be cautious and probably pass. Opening a graphics card within the first year for basic cleaning is unusual unless it was used in an extremely dusty environment. More likely, the seller repasted it, and there’s usually no need to do that so soon. Since $560 isn’t an especially remarkable price for a used card of this class, waiting for a cleaner listing may be the safer choice.

A card that has been disassembled may have had its thermal paste or pads changed, and it could also affect the manufacturer warranty depending on the region and brand policy. Ask why it was opened, request proof of purchase, and inspect the screws, cooler, PCB, and connector for damage. If the seller is vague or refuses testing, skip it.

Don’t automatically assume it’s defective, but only buy it if you can test it properly before handing over the money. Run a demanding game or benchmark for at least 20–30 minutes, check temperatures, clock speeds, fan behavior, visual artifacts, crashes, and unusual noise. Verify that the exact model is recognized correctly and that all display outputs work.
