I built my current PC about four years ago and it has an RTX 3060, an Intel i7-11700F, 16 GB of DDR4 memory, and a 1 TB SSD. I mainly play games such as Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant, Red Dead Redemption 2, and smaller indie titles. I use a 1440p 240 Hz monitor and would like to take better advantage of its refresh rate. I also want enough performance for demanding upcoming games such as GTA 6.
I'm considering a Radeon RX 9070 XT paired with either a Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 7700X. The full upgrade would cost roughly $1,000 CAD because I'd also need a new motherboard and 32 GB of DDR5 memory, although I could sell my existing components. Another option is an RX 7700 XT for about $700 CAD. Is the RX 9070 XT worth the extra money for the games I play, or would it make more sense to keep my current platform and upgrade only the graphics card?

For the games you listed, your RTX 3060 is still adequate, especially for competitive titles. The real question is what frame rate you’re targeting. At 1440p and 240 Hz, a stronger GPU can help, but you may not reach 240 FPS consistently in heavier games regardless of the graphics card.
The RX 9070 XT offers much better long-term performance and is one of the stronger price-to-performance options, so it makes more sense than spending around $700 CAD on an RX 7700 XT if the price gap is genuinely that small. However, moving to a new CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory makes the total upgrade much harder to justify. A platform upgrade would be most worthwhile if your current CPU is limiting minimum frame rates or you also need better performance in CPU-heavy games.
I’m using a 1440p 240 Hz display, which is why I’ve been considering the larger upgrade. I’d also like to be prepared for GTA 6, assuming the 9070 XT can provide smooth performance there.
I wouldn’t buy an RX 7700 XT for about $700 CAD. It’s still capable, but the price is too close to faster, newer options, and the extra performance and longevity of the RX 9070 XT are more appealing.
That said, you don’t necessarily need to replace your whole platform right now. Consider upgrading to 32 GB using two matching 16 GB DDR4 sticks, then put most of the budget toward the GPU. Your i7-11700F should handle the games you mentioned reasonably well, and a graphics card upgrade would be the most noticeable improvement. Depending on local pricing, an RX 9060 XT, RX 9070 XT, or a sensibly priced used card could offer better value than buying a new motherboard and DDR5 immediately.
That makes sense. I’ll compare the costs more carefully and may wait for a major sale before deciding.
For 1440p gaming, the RX 9070 XT should provide a substantial improvement over the RTX 3060. Red Dead Redemption 2 is demanding, but a system with a 9070 XT can deliver well over 80 FPS at 4K with suitable settings, so 1440p should be very comfortable. You should also see better minimum frame rates and more headroom for newer games.
Just keep in mind that no current hardware can guarantee a particular frame rate in an unreleased game. Choose the 9070 XT if you want the extra longevity and can comfortably afford the complete platform upgrade; otherwise, keeping the i7-11700F and replacing the GPU first is the more cost-effective route.
A Ryzen 5 7600X3D would be excellent for high-refresh gaming, but once the motherboard and DDR5 costs are included, the platform change becomes pretty expensive.
