I'm planning a few small changes to my PC's cooling setup. The case currently has two front intake fans and one rear exhaust fan, which seems like the conventional arrangement. However, I've seen builds that use mostly intake fans and rely on air pressure to push warm air out naturally.
My temperatures are already fine, so I'm not trying to solve an overheating issue. I'm mainly wondering how important the rear exhaust fan really is, whether it improves airflow enough to justify keeping it, and how much the answer depends on the case, cooler type, and fan layout. Have you compared temperatures with and without a rear exhaust fan?

The cooler setup matters too. With a traditional tower air cooler, a rear exhaust usually makes sense because it helps carry the CPU cooler’s warm air directly out of the case. With a top-mounted liquid cooler exhausting through the radiator, a separate rear fan may have a much smaller effect. A front-mounted radiator using intake fans is a different situation, since a rear exhaust can still help move heat out of the case.
You don’t absolutely need an exhaust fan if the intake fans are moving a lot of air and the case has enough openings for that air to leave. The air will eventually escape, but it may not take the best path over the hottest components. A rear exhaust gives the airflow a more predictable route, so it’s generally a useful and inexpensive addition rather than a strict requirement.
One fan probably won’t make a dramatic difference in everyday use if your current temperatures are already good. Modern CPUs and GPUs adjust their clocks based on temperature and power, so the main concern is sustained heavy workloads in a warm room, where trapped heat could cause some performance loss. In most cases, a slightly positive pressure setup—more intake than exhaust—is a good compromise because it helps limit dust entering through unfiltered gaps.
It depends heavily on the case and the rest of the airflow setup. A rear exhaust fan helps guide warm air out instead of letting it escape wherever there’s the least resistance, especially around the CPU socket. That said, some cases are designed around strong front or bottom intake and don’t benefit much from an additional rear fan. The easiest way to know is to lower the rear fan speed or temporarily disconnect it and compare temperatures under the same workload.

A top-mounted radiator can often handle most of the exhaust duty on its own, but the rear fan can still improve airflow around the motherboard and VRMs. Whether that matters will depend on the case and fan speeds.
