The right trigger on my Xbox One controller feels completely smooth, but the left trigger catches about halfway through the press. It feels and sounds like the trigger is pushing through a piece of rubber before reaching the end, and the resistance is noticeable even when the controller is powered off. I have some electronics repair experience, though I know triggers can be awkward to disassemble and reassemble. Since I mainly use the controller for emulated games, I could also adjust the trigger deadzone or make the input effectively binary. Is this likely an easy mechanical repair worth attempting, or should I just work around it in software?

If you can feel the problem with the controller switched off, it’s almost certainly mechanical rather than an input-calibration issue. Open it using a proper teardown guide and look for a cracked plastic piece, shifted spring, loose rubber pad, or something rubbing against the trigger. These controllers are generally manageable to take apart, though the trigger assemblies can still be fiddly. A software deadzone may hide the bad part of the travel, but it won’t remove the rough feeling and could cause compatibility or input-mapping problems in some games.
Check a reputable repair guide before opening it, then inspect the trigger for clearance problems or broken plastic. If there’s a piece physically blocking or scraping the trigger, calibration won’t really fix the underlying issue. The repair may be as simple as removing debris or replacing a damaged part, so it’s worth taking a look before deciding to live with it.

That makes sense. I may inspect it first and only use a larger deadzone as a fallback. Since my emulated games don’t need analog trigger control, making the input nearly binary would be acceptable if the repair turns out to be more trouble than it’s worth.
