I'm considering a small AM4 CPU upgrade. My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600X, Radeon RX 9070 XT, and 32GB of DDR4, connected to 4K 60Hz and 1440p 200Hz displays. Average frame rates are generally strong, but I'm seeing stutters and poor 1% lows in some CPU-heavy scenes.
I can buy a new Ryzen 5 5500X3D during an upcoming trip for roughly £120–£130 and expect to sell my 5600X for around £80–£100. That would make the upgrade cost approximately £20–£50. I can reuse a spare cooler, so I'm not counting that cost.
I play cinematic games such as Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk at 4K 60fps, while faster games are usually played at 1440p between 90 and 200fps, depending on what the system can sustain. I'm mainly interested in smoother frame times and better 1% lows rather than higher average FPS.
Would the 5500X3D provide a noticeable improvement at 1440p with a high refresh rate, and would it be worthwhile as a CPU I plan to keep for the next three or four years? I understand the improvement at native 4K may be limited. I'm also wondering whether six cores will remain adequate for that period, or whether it would be better to find a 5700X3D instead.

Some games simply stutter because of their engine or asset streaming, regardless of how powerful the CPU is. Hogwarts Legacy is a good example: even faster X3D processors can still show traversal stutter. Increasing system memory and using community fixes can help, but the problem may not be a hardware limitation in every scene.
If the game is otherwise holding a stable frame rate and only stutters in places such as the castle or Hogsmeade, a CPU upgrade may improve the situation but probably won’t eliminate it completely.
For only £20–£50 after selling the old chip, the 5500X3D sounds worthwhile. At 4K 60fps the GPU will often be the limiting factor, so average performance may barely change, but 1440p at high frame rates is much more likely to expose the 5600X’s weaker lows. The extra 3D cache should help with frame-time consistency, especially when using upscaling.
That said, a 5700X3D would be the more comfortable long-term option if you can find one at a reasonable price. Eight cores are becoming increasingly common in gaming PCs, so it offers more headroom for the next few years.
Do you think six cores will still be adequate for another two or three years if I’m planning to move to a newer platform after that? I’m hoping memory and platform prices will be more reasonable by then.
The difference can be very noticeable when a game is CPU-limited. In one comparison, moving from a lower-cache six-core processor to an X3D chip eliminated stutters that had affected several games. The benefit is much easier to see at 1440p or when using FSR than at native 4K, where the GPU often dominates.
The 5500X3D is still a six-core processor, but its main advantage is the much larger cache. It should outperform the regular non-X3D Ryzen 5000 chips in gaming and could be a good low-cost stopgap if the net upgrade really is only around £30.
That comparison may be more dramatic than my situation because the older chip had substantially less cache. I’m currently using FSR Quality only when I can’t maintain a steady 4K 60fps or 1440p 120–144fps, but it’s encouraging that the cache can still help with stuttering.
Before buying anything, check what the GPU is doing during one of the dips. If GPU usage drops below roughly 90% at the same time as the frame-time spike, that points toward a CPU or main-thread limitation and the upgrade is more likely to help. At 1440p high refresh, the 5500X3D could make a meaningful difference; at 4K 60fps, the improvement will usually be smaller.
Extra cache will not fix every stutter, though. Background processes, asset streaming, memory pressure, and game-engine problems can all cause spikes too.

That matches what I’ve seen. I upgraded from 16GB to 32GB because the game was using more than 20GB and touching the SSD, but it still stuttered in a few areas. Mods reduced it considerably, and performance is stable elsewhere.
