I've been using a Ryzen 7 5800X for several years and recently upgraded from an RTX 3060 Ti to a Radeon RX 9070 XT. I play at 1440p and 165 Hz, including a lot of Counter-Strike, and I'm wondering whether the CPU is limiting the new GPU. I'm considering moving to an AM5 platform with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but a roughly $750 bundle is expensive. In some games, especially Counter-Strike, I've also noticed consistent frame stuttering that I didn't have before. Is the upgrade worthwhile, or should the 5800X still be sufficient?

At 1440p, the 5800X should be perfectly usable in most GPU-heavy games. The CPU becomes more of a limitation in CPU-heavy titles or when you’re chasing extremely high frame rates. At 1080p, the limit would show up more often, while at 4K it usually wouldn’t matter much.
A 7800X3D would produce more frames in CPU-limited games, especially competitive shooters, but that doesn’t automatically make the current system inadequate. The real question is whether you’re failing to meet your target frame rate or experiencing noticeable frame-time spikes. If you’re already staying above 165 FPS, the upgrade may not be worth $750 by itself.
Memory speed and timings can also matter in CPU-sensitive games. Make sure your RAM is running with its intended profile enabled, and compare GPU utilization, CPU usage, and 1% lows in the games where the stutter happens. If the 5800X consistently delivers smooth performance above 165 FPS, keeping the current platform is reasonable.
Check the Radeon performance overlay while gaming. If GPU usage is consistently low, such as around 80% or less, while you’re below your desired frame rate and not capped by V-Sync or another limiter, the CPU may be holding the GPU back. Also check CPU and individual core usage rather than only the overall percentage.
The stuttering may not simply be caused by the 5800X. Check for graphics driver leftovers from the old card, shader compilation, background processes, temperatures, memory stability, and frame-time graphs. A clean driver installation and testing with different settings could identify the cause before spending money on a new platform.

I’m mainly on a 165 Hz monitor, although Counter-Strike often runs around 300 FPS. I’m not sure whether getting above the monitor’s refresh rate makes a CPU upgrade worthwhile.
