I'm considering moving from an Intel Core i5-13600KF to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. My current system has an RX 6950 XT and 32 GB of DDR4, although I already bought DDR5 memory last year for the platform change. Would the RX 6950 XT still be a good match for the 9800X3D, or would the new CPU be held back enough that I should upgrade the graphics card too? I mainly play at 1440p, including Escape from Tarkov, which can be particularly demanding on the CPU.

If you are choosing between the CPU and GPU upgrade based on general gaming performance, check which component is actually limiting you in the games you play. A 7800X3D could offer better value if you want a cheaper AM5 upgrade, while the 9800X3D makes more sense if you plan to keep the motherboard for several years and upgrade the graphics card later. With the 6950 XT, there is no urgent need to replace both parts at once.
For most 1440p and 4K games, the RX 6950 XT will probably be the limiting component, so switching from a 13600KF to a 9800X3D may not produce a noticeable improvement. If your GPU is already running near 100% utilization and you want higher average or higher-fidelity performance, a graphics card upgrade would make more sense first. Your current CPU and GPU are still a strong combination.
A 9800X3D could be worthwhile if you mainly play CPU-heavy games such as Escape from Tarkov, especially if you are chasing high and consistent frame rates. In typical GPU-bound games, though, the RX 6950 XT will hide most of the CPU upgrade. The 9800X3D also gives you a newer platform and a stronger future upgrade path, but it may be more of a platform investment than an immediate performance boost.
Escape from Tarkov is my main reason for considering the change. It can be unusually CPU-heavy, so I’m hoping the extra cache would help more there than it would in most games.

The main benefit of changing platforms now would be avoiding another motherboard and CPU replacement when you eventually move to a faster graphics card. It is less compelling if you are only expecting a large performance increase from the current GPU.
