Is a Ryzen 9 9900X3D and RTX 5070 Ti a good first PC build?

I'm planning my first PC, mainly for gaming, programming, and running AI models locally. My current parts list is a Ryzen 9 9900X3D, Gigabyte RTX 5070 Ti Aero, 32GB of DDR5-6000 RAM, and an ASUS ROG Strix B850-A motherboard. Does this combination make sense, or would you recommend different parts for better gaming, productivity, and AI performance?

The overall parts are reasonable, but 32GB of RAM may feel restrictive if you’re programming while running AI tools and other applications. Starting with 64GB could give you more breathing room, especially if the system will also be used for virtual machines, development environments, or larger models.

The RTX 5070 Ti can work well for local AI because Nvidia has broader software support, but its 16GB of VRAM may become a limitation with larger models. If a model does not fit in VRAM, performance can drop dramatically. For gaming alone, the Radeon 9070 XT may offer better value, but Nvidia is usually the less troublesome option for AI on Windows.

AMD cards can run some AI workloads, but ROCm support and setup on Windows can still be more complicated. Nvidia is generally faster and easier for many local image-generation and model tools.

I’d reconsider the motherboard brand and compare similarly priced MSI or Gigabyte boards. There have been reports of problems involving some AM5 boards and Ryzen 9000 processors, so check current BIOS support, power delivery, and user reviews before buying. Make sure the board supports the CPU out of the box or has a convenient BIOS flashback feature.

For mostly gaming, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is generally the better choice. The 9900X3D uses two chiplets, with the 3D V-Cache only on one of them, so it can lose to the 9800X3D in some games. If you need more cores for heavier productivity work, a regular Ryzen 9 9900X or 9950X may make more sense than the 9900X3D.
