I'm planning a major PC upgrade and currently use an RTX 3090, 64GB of DDR4 memory, and a Threadripper 3970X. The Threadripper is getting old and isn't ideal for gaming, although it has been excellent for workstation tasks. I'm considering moving to a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which would also require a newer motherboard and DDR5 memory.
My main uses are work and 4K gaming on an Aorus 4K 144Hz monitor. Would the RTX 3090 create a major bottleneck with the new CPU, or would the upgrade still be worthwhile? GPU prices are extremely high, so I'd prefer to keep the 3090 if it remains capable. Should I replace the graphics card now, or wait for better pricing and a future generation?

The Threadripper 3970X uses a different platform, so moving to a 9950X3D definitely means replacing the motherboard and memory as well. Once the new system is built, you can simply carry over the 3090 and test it before deciding on a graphics upgrade. Swapping the GPU later is straightforward and doesn’t require rebuilding the rest of the system.
A newer CPU, motherboard, and memory platform can still help the 3090 perform more consistently, especially in CPU-heavy games, high-refresh situations, and demanding work applications. In most 4K games, though, the GPU will remain the bottleneck—and that’s normally desirable because it means the graphics card is being fully utilized.
You could upgrade the platform first, keep the 3090, and replace the GPU later when there’s a genuinely worthwhile performance jump or prices become more reasonable.
The RTX 3090 is still a very capable 4K graphics card, and it’s considerably faster than what most people are using. Keeping it for now is completely reasonable.

That makes sense. I’ll probably upgrade the platform first and hold onto the 3090 until a GPU upgrade offers a much bigger improvement.
