I currently have a Core i9-12900K and can buy a brand-new, sealed Core i9-14900K at a very good price. If I sell my existing processor, the upgrade would effectively cost me nothing. My system uses an ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi II motherboard with BIOS 2107, which includes Intel's 0x12F microcode. Would upgrading be reasonably safe with the latest BIOS and power settings, or could the 14900K still develop the voltage-related degradation problems reported with some 13th- and 14th-generation processors?

I’d probably keep the 12900K and put the money toward a future platform upgrade or graphics card. Even with the latest BIOS, the 14900K still carries more uncertainty than newer CPU options, runs hot, and uses a lot of power. A zero-cost upgrade sounds attractive, but the potential troubleshooting and lack of a fallback make it less appealing.
The 14900K is the fastest processor available for that motherboard and would be a noticeable improvement in heavily threaded workloads. Your board’s VRM should handle it, but you’ll need a strong cooler and sensible power limits. Memory stability and heat can also become more difficult, so I wouldn’t assume it will be a simple drop-in upgrade.
If your 12900K is already doing everything you need, this is more of a tempting side-grade than a necessary upgrade. Intel’s BIOS and microcode updates appear to have reduced the failure rate, and the extended warranty helps, but they cannot undo damage in a chip that was already affected. I’d only consider it if the price is genuinely excellent and the seller can provide the original purchase date and warranty information.
That’s my concern too. Since I’d be selling the 12900K, I wouldn’t have a spare CPU if the 14900K became unstable later.

That’s where I’m leaning. Waiting for the next major generation could make more sense than investing further in a socket with limited upgrade options.
