I'm considering buying a thin ultrabook with an OLED display at a good discount. The aluminum back of the screen has a small, roughly penny-sized dent from an impact with a hard object. I can inspect and test it in person, but I'm worried the damage could eventually put pressure on the OLED panel or cause the screen to fail later. How durable are laptop displays against this kind of dent, and what should I check before buying it?

The discount should account for the possibility of hidden impact damage. Test every part of the display, move the hinge through its full range, and check that the webcam, Wi-Fi antennas, and lid alignment work normally. If the dent is deep enough to touch or deform the panel, or if the lid flexes unusually, I’d skip it unless the price is low enough to justify replacing the display assembly.
There’s no way to judge the risk accurately without seeing the damage, but a small, shallow dent in the outer aluminum cover is often only cosmetic. OLED panels are more vulnerable to direct pressure than ordinary handling, though, so inspect the inside of the lid if possible. Look for unevenness, pressure marks, flickering, dead pixels, cracks, or a spot where the bezel is lifting.
A dent by itself doesn’t automatically mean the screen will fail later. The important questions are whether the lid is bent inward, whether the dent is close to the display area or hinges, and whether anything is pressing against the panel. Test the screen at different brightness levels and colors, check for lines or dark spots, and make sure the lid opens and closes normally without creaking or rubbing.
So if the panel looks normal and the lid isn’t pressing against it, the dent probably won’t cause a delayed failure?

I’d also check the laptop while it’s running for at least 15–20 minutes. Some problems only appear after the system warms up or when the lid is moved.
