I'm considering buying a thin ultrabook with an OLED display at a good discount. The aluminum lid has a small, roughly penny-sized dent from an impact with a hard object. I can inspect and test it in person, but I'm worried the dent could be pressing against the OLED panel or lead to screen failure over time. How durable are laptop displays against this kind of damage, and what should I check before buying?

OLED panels can be damaged by concentrated pressure, so don’t press on the dent to test it. Look at the screen from the front and side while the laptop is running, and compare the dent’s location with any visible distortion or bright spot. If the lid is bowed inward, the glass or panel is already showing marks, or the hinge area is affected, I’d skip it unless the price is low enough to cover a potential display replacement.
A small dent doesn’t automatically mean the screen will fail later, but there’s no way to judge the risk without seeing it and checking the laptop. Inspect the display while it’s on for bright or dark spots, lines, flickering, uneven brightness, pressure marks, and dead pixels. Also check whether the lid opens and closes normally and whether the dent has sharp edges or is pushing inward toward the panel.
The bigger concern is usually hidden damage to the lid, hinges, or display assembly rather than the dent itself. Open and close the lid carefully, test different viewing angles, and gently check whether the lid flexes or makes unusual noises. Run a plain white, black, and colored background to reveal OLED damage. If everything works and the dent isn’t pressing against the screen, it may be fine, but the discount should account for the possibility of future problems.
It’s about the size of a penny and looks fairly shallow. I’m mainly concerned that pressure could slowly damage the OLED after I buy it.
