Four DDR4 sticks can work fine, especially if the kits have matching specifications, but it isn’t guaranteed that two separate kits will run together at their advertised XMP speed. The memory may fall back to a lower speed, or you might need to adjust settings manually. Check your motherboard and CPU memory-support lists before buying.
If you want the least hassle, selling the current kit and buying a matched 2x16GB kit is usually the safer option. Two modules are easier for the memory controller to handle and are more likely to reach higher DDR4 speeds. Four sticks are more demanding, particularly when overclocking or using XMP.
It’s not automatically a bad idea. Many systems run 4x8GB without issues at stock or moderately lower speeds, but stability depends on the motherboard, processor’s memory controller, BIOS, and the specific modules. Make sure the system is stable with a memory test after installing them.
All four modules will generally run at the speed and timings of the slowest configuration. Even sticks with the same brand and advertised model can use different memory chips between production batches, so “identical” kits aren’t always a guarantee of compatibility.
