My current gaming PC has a Ryzen 5 5600X, Radeon RX 9070 XT, 32GB of DDR4-3600 memory, and a TUF Gaming B550-PLUS WiFi II motherboard. I mainly play CPU-heavy games such as Total War and Monster Hunter, and I'm hoping to keep this system for several more years. I play at 1440p and don't want to replace the motherboard, so any upgrade would need to stay on AM4. Would moving to a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D make a noticeable difference, or should I keep the 5600X?

Before spending heavily on a 5800X3D, compare its price with the total cost of moving to AM5 after selling your current CPU, board, and memory. A newer platform gives you an upgrade path, but staying on AM4 with a 5700X3D is simpler and can extend the life of this system for several years. For your stated goal of keeping the current motherboard, the 5700X3D is the sensible recommendation, with the 5800X3D worthwhile only at a particularly good price.
The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is probably the best-value AM4 upgrade, while the 5800X3D is the fastest gaming chip available for the platform. The extra 3D cache can improve average FPS, frame-time consistency, and stutter in CPU-heavy games, but the improvement varies a lot by title. Some games may barely change, while others could gain roughly 20–40%.
I went from a 5600X to a 5700X3D with a high-end Radeon card at 1440p and saw substantial gains in several games, including smoother minimums and fewer drops. The upgrade is most worthwhile if you notice the GPU sitting below full utilization while one or more CPU threads are maxed out.
