Is an Eight-Year-Old 120mm AIO Cooler Still Worth Buying?

My HP Omen is overheating, and I've seen tutorials showing people install a Corsair H60 AIO cooler. I found a supposedly brand-new H60 for $25, but it appears to be a pre-2018 model. Since it may have been sitting in storage for years, should I avoid it and buy a newer cooler instead?

Iโd skip an AIO that old, especially one bought from an individual with no meaningful warranty. Pumps eventually wear out, and the coolant can slowly permeate through the tubing over the years. A basic air cooler from Thermalright would likely cost about the same and be just as good or better.

Older Corsair units can definitely keep working for a long time, so itโs possible the cooler would be fine. However, newer air coolers are inexpensive, quieter, and avoid the risk of a pump failure. Unless you specifically need an AIO for clearance reasons, air cooling is the safer purchase.

A 120mm AIO isnโt a great choice even when itโs new. A modern $25โ$40 air cooler should perform at least as well, have fewer failure points, and usually be easier to install and maintainโas long as it fits inside the HP Omen case.

There isnโt a guaranteed expiration date. Some AIOs run for many years, while others lose their pumps much sooner. The fact that itโs unused helps, but an older unit can still have aged seals and fluid loss, and it may be near or beyond its warranty period. I wouldnโt take that gamble for a cooler thatโs only $25.

QuietMaple_23: Exactly. Even in perfect condition, a small 120mm radiator generally wonโt outperform a decent tower-style air cooler.
