I'm currently running an i5-12400F with DDR5-6000 memory and an RX 6700 XT. I mainly play competitive games such as Counter-Strike and VALORANT at 1080p, and I want enough performance to make the most of my 240 Hz monitor before eventually moving to 360–400 Hz. I'm considering upgrading to an i5-14600K and possibly an RX 6800 XT, since I can get one at a good price. Would the 14600K be a good choice for maximizing LGA1700 performance, and would it bottleneck the GPU? I'm also unsure whether it would make more sense to choose a newer RX 7000- or 9000-series card instead. My motherboard is an ASUS Prime Z790-P and my power supply is a 700 W be quiet! Pure Power 11 Gold.

Before buying anything, compare your current GPU usage and frame-time data in the games you actually play. If the 6700 XT is already well below full utilization while the CPU is limiting FPS, the 14600K should help. If the GPU is near 99% usage, then a graphics-card upgrade will matter more. Your 700 W Gold power supply should generally handle a 14600K and 6800 XT, assuming it is in good condition and properly connected.
The CPU upgrade makes more sense than replacing the 6700 XT purely for competitive games. At 1080p low settings, the faster CPU may improve average FPS and especially minimums, while a 6800 XT is only worth buying if the price is genuinely good. Newer RX 7000- or 9000-series cards may offer better features and efficiency, but they are not automatically a better value for maximizing FPS in these games.
The i5-14600K is a strong gaming upgrade and should pair well with a 6800 XT, especially at 1080p competitive settings. It should be capable of very high frame rates in games like CS2 and VALORANT, so a meaningful CPU bottleneck is unlikely in this setup. Since you already have a Z790 board and DDR5 memory, upgrading the CPU is much simpler than switching platforms. Just make sure your BIOS is updated and use sensible power and temperature limits for the 14600K.
A 14600K paired with a 6900 XT has been reported to deliver roughly 450–600 FPS at 1440p low settings in CS2, so it should have no trouble driving a 240 Hz display and can make sense for a future high-refresh upgrade. Results will vary with maps, settings, and frame-time consistency, but the combination is certainly fast enough for competitive gaming.
That’s why I’m leaning toward the 14600K. I’d rather get the most out of my current LGA1700 platform than replace the motherboard and move to AM5.
