Is an i5-14600KF with an RTX 5070 a good 1440p gaming upgrade?

I'm planning a PC upgrade for 1440p gaming at ultra settings. DDR5 memory is currently too expensive, so I'm considering an Intel Core i5-14600KF with a compatible DDR4 motherboard and a single matching 16GB DDR4 module. Would this be a good pairing with an RTX 5070? I already have a 750W 80+ Gold power supply.

Check the motherboard’s power delivery and cooling before choosing one. The 14600KF can draw significant power under heavy loads, so avoid very basic boards with weak VRMs. Also remember that the KF model has no integrated graphics, which is fine as long as the dedicated GPU is installed.

Don’t buy just one 16GB stick if you can avoid it. Use a matched 2x16GB kit instead, ideally something like DDR4-3200 CL16 or DDR4-3600 CL18. Two sticks enable dual-channel memory, while a single stick can noticeably hurt performance and may leave you short on capacity in newer games.

The 14600KF can perform very well with DDR4, but it won’t always match its DDR5 performance. Depending on the game and settings, slower memory can reduce frame rates, sometimes substantially. At 1440p ultra settings the GPU will often be the limiting factor, though, so a good DDR4 kit is still a sensible way to control costs.

The 14600KF and RTX 5070 are a reasonable combination for 1440p gaming, and a 750W 80+ Gold supply should generally be sufficient if it’s a good-quality unit. Make sure you buy the DDR4 version of the motherboard, since DDR4 and DDR5 boards are not interchangeable. I’d also consider the Radeon RX 9070 or 9070 XT if pricing is similar, since they can offer more performance for the money in some regions.
