I'm trying to improve an older desktop without replacing the whole platform. It currently has an Intel Core i3-4130, an ASUS B85M-G motherboard, 8GB of single-channel DDR3, a GeForce GT 630, and a 350–400W power supply. The CPU often reaches 100% usage, which causes stuttering and frame drops in games such as VALORANT and while using lightweight development tools. I'm considering a used Core i7-4790, or possibly a Xeon E3-1231 v3. Would moving from 2 cores/4 threads to 4 cores/8 threads noticeably improve frame consistency and reduce CPU-related stuttering? Is the motherboard's power delivery adequate for the i7 under normal gaming loads? I'm also planning to update the BIOS, install a second matching 8GB DDR3 stick for dual-channel memory, and use a better CPU cooler. Is there anything else I should check before making the upgrade?

Before buying, keep expectations realistic: the GT 630 is extremely weak by modern standards and will likely become the main gaming bottleneck, especially at 1080p. The i7 can reduce CPU-side stutter, but it won’t make demanding games run well if the graphics card is already maxed out. A newer used GPU may provide a larger gaming improvement, provided the power supply and case support it.
The i7-4790 should be a substantial improvement over the i3 because the extra four threads help with newer games and background tasks. However, CPU usage may still show close to 100%—that number represents how much of the available processing capacity is being used, not whether the system is performing badly. Look at frame times, stutter, and per-core usage as well. Adding a second 8GB DDR3 module is also worthwhile, since dual-channel memory can improve minimum frame rates.
The ASUS B85M-G should be able to run an i7-4790 at stock settings, assuming the BIOS supports it and the VRM area has reasonable airflow. Don’t expect meaningful overclocking on this board. Use a decent tower cooler rather than relying on an old Intel stock cooler, and check temperatures after installation so the processor doesn’t throttle.
The Xeon E3-1231 v3 is similar to the i7-4790 in core and thread count, but it has no integrated graphics. It can be a good cheaper alternative if the motherboard BIOS lists it as supported and you will always use the dedicated graphics card. Whichever processor you choose, confirm BIOS compatibility first, install the RAM in the correct paired slots, and replace old thermal paste.
