My roughly 10-year-old system has started feeling slow, and I'm considering upgrading the CPU without replacing the motherboard. It currently has an Intel i5-6500, a Z170 motherboard, 16 GB of DDR4 memory, a GTX 1070, and a Cryorig C7 cooler. The board should support a 7th-generation processor after a BIOS update, and used i7-7700K chips are selling for about $65. I play at 1080p, mostly less-demanding games. Would the 7700K provide a noticeable improvement, especially in CPU-heavy games or stuttering, or would it be better to save for a newer motherboard and processor platform?

A newer budget platform would offer a much larger improvement. A Ryzen 5500 system, for example, can often reuse the DDR4 memory and is substantially faster than both the i5-6500 and i7-7700K. Depending on local prices, a recent low-end Intel processor with a DDR4 board could also be a better investment than putting money into the old Z170 platform.
The i7-7700K is clearly faster: it has higher clock speeds, Hyper-Threading, and a bit more cache. You could see better minimum frame rates and fewer stutters in CPU-limited games, while GPU-bound games may barely change. It is an improvement, but not a dramatic transformation. Make sure the BIOS is updated before swapping CPUs, and keep an eye on temperatures with the small C7 cooler.
It depends heavily on what is limiting performance. Check whether the CPU is reaching near-100% usage while the GTX 1070 has headroom in the games you play. If so, the 7700K could help; otherwise, the upgrade may produce only a few extra frames. Looking at benchmarks for your specific games is more useful than relying on general CPU scores.
For the price, the 7700K is reasonable if you want one last inexpensive upgrade and can verify that it works. You could probably resell it later with only a small loss. I would buy it for smoother performance in CPU-heavy games, not because it will deliver a night-and-day increase everywhere.
At $65, it can make sense as a cheap stopgap, especially if you sell the i5 and reduce the net cost to around $30. Just keep your expectations realistic: it will extend the system’s useful life somewhat, but it will not feel like a new computer. If the current PC is still adequate, saving for a newer platform is the better long-term move.

That makes sense. I was hoping to avoid replacing multiple parts, but it sounds like the age of the platform limits how much an inexpensive CPU swap can accomplish.
