Is an RTX 3060 a Good Fit for an i7 4790 Build?

I'm planning to upgrade my PC, which currently has an i7 4790 processor but no GPU. I found someone selling an RTX 3060 for $140, and I'm curious about potential bottleneck issues. Will my i7 be a significant constraint on performance, or will it just lead to occasional FPS drops while gaming at 1080p?

If you're truly looking for a long-term investment, I recommend building a more balanced system. Something like an i5 14400F to start, and you can always upgrade later. But if the budget is tight right now, think about getting the 3060 and enjoying some games!

Honestly, for $140, that RTX 3060 seems like a solid deal. Your i7 4790 might hold you back a bit in CPU-heavy games, but at 1080p, most titles should still run smoothly. The more demanding games like RDR2 or Cyberpunk will perform just fine, while less demanding games like Valorant or CSGO could show a bit more of that bottleneck, though they're not super demanding anyway. Plus, you can transfer the GPU to a newer setup later on, so it's definitely worth considering.

As long as you’ve got 16GB of RAM with that 4790, it should work fine for gaming. Just check that your power supply can handle it and has those 8-pin GPU plugs. Also, having an SSD is a big plus! I had a similar setup with a 1070 and managed to game at 1080p without issues. Just keep in mind, your setup won’t be compatible with Windows 11 due to TPM requirements, but hey, it’s still a good budget build!

If it’s the RTX 3060 12GB, just grab it! Yes, you’ll see some bottlenecking, but it won’t ruin your experience. The 8GB version is decent too, but not as compelling. Overall, if you need a GPU, this is a great opportunity.

You'll definitely experience some CPU bottlenecks, but honestly, don’t let that stress you. You'll still get a lot of fun out of games like RDR2. Go for it!
