Is Boot.dev worth paying for as a future data analyst?

I'm starting my senior year studying applied mathematics and statistics, and I'm hoping to work as a data analyst after graduation. Since I'm not a computer science major, my formal programming experience is mostly C++ and SAS. I expect to need skills such as SQL, Power BI, and possibly other programming languages. I've tried several free learning platforms, and Boot.dev's interactive format works best for me while still being relatively affordable. Is it worth paying for and investing the time, or would I be better off learning these skills through free resources or another approach?

The main benefit of a subscription is the learning experience rather than exclusive information. You can usually read the lessons without paying, while the subscription adds browser-based coding exercises, test cases, and guided hints. If those features help you stay engaged, spending around a month’s subscription cost may be reasonable.

It can be worth it if the interactive, game-like format keeps you practicing consistently. The information itself is available elsewhere for free, but a structured course can save you time searching for good explanations and exercises. Just make sure the material matches your actual goals and don’t focus so much on completing every lesson that you neglect practical projects.

Use the platform to build fundamentals, then apply them to realistic projects. Interactive exercises are useful for learning syntax and logic, but data analyst work also requires working with messy datasets, writing SQL queries, creating dashboards, and explaining results. Try building a small portfolio project instead of pursuing completion for its own sake.

That’s a good distinction. Passing guided exercises feels productive, but you learn a different set of skills when you have to choose the data, fix errors, and decide what the final dashboard should show.
