Is Building a $675–$950 Gaming PC Still Worth It?

I'm planning to buy or build a gaming PC with a budget of about $675–$950. My main reason for building it myself would be to save money, but RAM prices seem unusually high right now, so I'm wondering whether building is still worthwhile—especially toward the lower end of that budget. I'd like the system to last a reasonable amount of time and run modern games. Would a good prebuilt offer similar durability and performance, or is a custom build still the better choice?

A prebuilt can be the better deal if you find one with a decent power supply, motherboard, and upgrade-friendly case. Don’t assume every prebuilt is good, though—compare the exact parts and check for proprietary components or weak cooling.

RAM probably isn’t the only major cost to watch. Focus on balancing the graphics card and processor, since the GPU will have the biggest effect on gaming performance. A Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X with a B550 board, 16GB of DDR4-3200, and a used RX 6700 XT, RTX 2080 Super, or RTX 3060 Ti could be a reasonable starting point, depending on local prices. A quality 650–750W power supply is also important.

A DDR4-based AM4 build can still be a practical way to control costs. Newer DDR5 platforms may offer a better upgrade path, but the memory and platform are often more expensive. Used storage and graphics cards can help, although used parts take more effort to track down and should be tested carefully.

At this budget, you may need to compromise on either graphics settings or performance in newer games. If you can wait and save a little more, that would give you more room. Otherwise, buying some parts used—especially the graphics card—can make the budget work.

Mid-range builds have a habit of growing once you start adding upgrades. Set a firm total budget first, then prioritize the GPU, reliable power supply, and enough storage. At this price, a sale-priced prebuilt may beat a completely new custom build, while a custom build becomes more attractive if you’re comfortable buying used parts.
