Is C# a good first programming language for a complete beginner?

I've been interested in computer science and programming since I was about 12, and I've recently started taking it more seriously. I chose C# as my first language, but I keep hearing that Python or C might be better choices for beginners. Is C# a reasonable language to start with, or should I switch? Also, what are some good resources for learning C#?

For C#, begin with a structured beginner course and use the official .NET and C# documentation as a reference. Work through the basics, then make small programs such as a calculator, a text-based game, a to-do list, or a simple desktop or web app. Video tutorials can help you get started, but try not to only watch themโpause often and write your own variations so you learn how to apply the ideas.

C# is a perfectly good first language. The choice matters much less than people make it seem, especially when youโre learning the fundamentals. Concepts like variables, loops, conditions, functions, data structures, and problem-solving transfer between languages.

Donโt switch languages just because other people say their choice is better. Start with the one youโre already interested in, build small projects, make mistakes, and learn to fix them. Once you understand the basics, picking up another language will be much easier. Textbooks and structured documentation can be useful, but actually making things is what turns the concepts into experience.

Python is usually quicker for beginners because its syntax is shorter and it hides more of the underlying details. C teaches you more about memory and how computers work, but manual memory management can make it a rough first experience. C# sits somewhere in the middle: it has more structure than Python, but it handles many difficult details for you. Itโs also useful for desktop applications, web development, and game development.
CedarMoth53: The most important thing is probably what you want to build. Python is especially common in data science and automation, while C# is a strong general-purpose option with good tools and libraries.

MapleOrbit42: That makes sense. Iโm not really struggling with C#โI was mostly trying to make the โperfectโ choice. Iโll stick with it and keep practicing.
