I'm comparing CL30 and CL38 memory and want to know which is the better choice. How much difference does the CAS latency make in real-world performance, especially for gaming? I'm using a Ryzen 5 9600X, so should I prioritize lower latency, higher memory speed, or a particular combination such as DDR5-6000 CL30?

CL means CAS latency, and the lower number is generally better. However, CL by itself doesn’t tell the whole story—you also need to compare the RAM’s speed. For example, DDR5-6000 CL30 and DDR5-6400 CL32 have roughly the same real-world latency, around 10 nanoseconds.
If both kits have the same frequency, choose CL30 because it has lower latency. If the CL38 kit is substantially faster, the comparison is less obvious, so calculate the actual latency instead of looking only at the CL number. For most everyday use and gaming, either will work well, and you probably won’t notice the difference.
For a Ryzen 5 9600X, a good DDR5-6000 kit with low timings—especially CL30—is a sensible target. CL30 will be technically faster than CL38 at the same memory speed, but the gaming difference is usually small, often only a few percent or less. Capacity, stability, and running the correct memory profile matter more.

For a Ryzen system, DDR5-6000 is often the safer choice. Faster memory can sometimes make the CPU run the memory controller at a less favorable ratio, which can cancel out the benefit.
