I'm planning a new studio PC and want to make sure the memory choice is sensible. My current system has a Ryzen 9 5900X, Radeon 6800 XT, and 32GB of DDR4-3200, but it struggles with severe stuttering when I run a large project. My sessions can include Superior Drummer 3 routed to roughly 16 processed channels, several group buses and reverbs, multiple quad-tracked guitars using amp sims and EQ, plus bass, synths, effects, and mastering plugins. CPU usage often reaches 50–60% with drums alone and spikes badly once the guitars and other processing are enabled. I prefer keeping the entire arrangement live in one session instead of bouncing tracks whenever possible.
The planned upgrade is based around a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and a Radeon 9070 XT. I originally selected 48GB of DDR5-8000 because the motherboard lists support for it, but I've since seen recommendations that DDR5-6000 may offer better latency, stability, and overall performance. For about the same price, I could get 96GB of DDR5-6000. I also play some games, although my main priority is music production. Should I choose DDR5-8000 or DDR5-6000 for this system? Would the extra capacity be more useful for a DAW, and is using four memory sticks a bad idea?

For a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, DDR5-6000 with a good EXPO profile is generally the sensible target. DDR5-8000 may have higher raw bandwidth, but it can be much harder to run reliably and may require a less favorable memory-controller ratio, which can erase the latency advantage. A stable 6000 MT/s kit is usually preferable to an unstable or heavily tuned 8000 kit, especially for a workstation where long sessions matter.
For this workload, I’d prioritize capacity and stability over maximum memory frequency. A 2x48GB DDR5-6000 kit would be a strong choice, assuming it appears on the motherboard’s qualified memory list or has a good compatibility track record. It gives the DAW plenty of headroom for sample libraries, plugins, and large projects without needing to populate all four slots.
48GB isn’t inherently a problem just because it isn’t a power of two. A matched 2x24GB kit can work perfectly well. The important points are using a matched kit, checking compatibility, and avoiding unnecessary mixing of separate kits.
Using four DIMMs is not automatically faster for DAW work. On current desktop platforms, four modules often reduce the maximum stable memory speed and can require looser timings. Two modules are normally easier on the memory controller, so 2x48GB at DDR5-6000 is likely a better balance than 4x24GB or a very aggressive DDR5-8000 configuration. Your DAW is unlikely to notice much difference between those speeds, while it can definitely benefit from additional RAM if samples or plugins are using it.
The severe stuttering probably isn’t caused by DDR4-3200 alone. Real-time audio performance is often limited by a single heavily loaded CPU thread, a plugin with poor latency behavior, low buffer settings, thermal or power limits, audio-interface drivers, or background processes. Before rebuilding, it’s worth checking per-core usage, increasing the buffer during mixing, using plugin delay compensation carefully, and testing troublesome instruments or effects. The new CPU should help substantially, but faster RAM by itself may not solve sudden audio dropouts.

The motherboard’s listed memory support is usually an overclocking capability, not a guarantee that every CPU and kit will run at that speed automatically. The processor’s memory controller and the exact DIMM configuration matter too.
