Is GoDaddy ripping us off with our domain and email services?

We run a local excavation business and have a website on Squarespace, but our domain and email services are through GoDaddy. We're not very tech savvy and have been seeing a lot of concerning posts about GoDaddy lately, which makes us feel uneasy. Recently, we've experienced multiple hacks on our emails, with scammers generating fake invoices and scamming our customers. On top of that, we're inundated with phishing emails.

We initially paid $1,700 for a 3-year package that included three employee emails and some security features, although GoDaddy doesn't cover our domain. Now they suggest we switch everything over to them for full management, charging $240 per year plus an additional $260 for website security, with a confusing offer of a 55% discount for a ten-year plan costing $3,300.

My question is, should we abandon ship and switch entirely to Squarespace for our website and emails, or consider a different platform like WordPress? I just don't trust what GoDaddy is selling us and I'm worried we might get in deeper!

Honestly, anything but GoDaddy! I've heard too many horror stories about them. If you're not tech-savvy, I recommend trying Dreamhost; they have a great reputation for straightforward service.

I've been with Dreamhost for 20 years! It’s nice to see others validating it. By the way, can Dreamhost host a full app with a database like Vercel?

You need to leave GoDaddy. They’re notorious for making money off people who don't understand tech. I don’t even need to read your whole post to know you’re being taken for a ride. Move your domain and email to a more reputable provider.

Absolutely, ditch GoDaddy! They tend to upsell things you don’t need. Since you're using Squarespace, consider moving your domain to Google Domains. It’ll simplify things for you. I recommend checking into Cloudflare for enhanced security as well.

We're really leaning towards moving everything to Squarespace. There’s a local IT company suggesting they could help us monitor our site and emails. Does that sound worth it?

Yes, you're definitely being ripped off. The hacking issues might not be just GoDaddy but also possibly due to insecure devices. Change your email passwords, consider moving to a more reliable hosting company, and find someone you trust to give you advice better than GoDaddy's sales team.

You can keep your domain where it is and improve your email security with strong passwords and two-factor authentication. If you’re satisfied with Squarespace, just migrate your email to a more trustworthy provider. It doesn't make sense to uproot everything just because of GoDaddy's sales pitch.
