Is it a good idea to duplicate the same website across multiple domains?

I own several domain names built around the same well-known English phrase. I'm considering putting essentially the same website design, wording, and content on every domain. Has anyone tried this before, and could it be useful for attracting visitors or advertising? I'm curious whether there's a creative reason to do it, or whether I'd be better off choosing one main domain.

The practical approach is to build one genuinely useful site and redirect the extra domains to it with permanent redirects. That keeps the domains under your control and concentrates any authority, links, and visitors on the site that matters instead of splitting everything between near-identical copies.

For search visibility, cloning the same site across several domains usually won’t give you several times the traffic. Search engines tend to group the identical pages, choose one version as canonical, and largely ignore the others. It can also look manipulative if the domains are being used to target the same searches.

Technically, duplicate content isn’t always treated as a direct penalty. The bigger issue is that the search engine selects one preferred version, while doorway-style networks made mainly to capture extra rankings can still violate spam policies.

A canonical tag can indicate which version should be indexed, but it doesn’t make a network of identical sites valuable. If the domains represent different countries or audiences, they can work as separate sites, but they need genuinely localized content and appropriate language or regional markup rather than identical text everywhere.

Before building anything, it’s worth clarifying the goal. If you’re protecting a phrase or brand, redirects make sense. If you want search traffic, one strong site with useful, original pages is much safer and more effective than several cookie-cutter domains. Multiple domains with thin identical content can also resemble spam or scam networks.
