Is it a good idea to host my web projects on an old laptop?

I'm diving into web development and have a few dynamic side projects that aren't suited for static hosting on platforms like GitHub Pages. Since most cloud deployment options come with monthly fees or limited free trials, I'm considering using an old laptop I have lying around to host my projects. I'm not expecting high traffic, but I want to make them available online. What are the pros and cons of doing this? I've heard mixed things about security and the potential headaches involved.

If you choose to go down this route, be aware that if your site is online, bots will definitely try to hack it. If they find a vulnerability, it could compromise your laptop and your home network. So, how confident are you in your ability to secure your projects?

The biggest upside is the learning experience! Youโll get a hands-on lesson in server management. However, there are significant risks too. Security is a major concern, and depending on your ISP, you might be violating their terms of service by hosting from home. If you're new to this, a low-cost VPS might be a better choice overall.

For a cheaper alternative, services like Google Cloud or AWS have free tiers that could work for basic needs. Plus, if you get a cheap VPS, you can avoid a lot of the headaches that come from hosting it yourself.

One of the main downsides is cost; running the laptop 24/7 will increase your electricity bill, and the hardware might fail over time, needing repairs or replacement. Plus, you'll have to handle all the security and infrastructure issues, which can be annoying if you're just starting out. There are still affordable hosting options out there, like some free tiers for small projects.

Using an old laptop can be unreliable, and it often requires much more effort than going with a hosting service. You'll need to manage everything yourself, and it could end up being more trouble than it's worth!
