I'm considering switching my old DELL Inspiron N5110 laptop from Windows 7 to Linux. My father thinks it might be tough and inconvenient. What are your thoughts on this?

I’ve used Linux Mint on multiple Dell and HP laptops without any issues at all. Honestly, they run way better than they ever did on Windows!
Honestly, just give it a shot! Installing a Linux distro is pretty straightforward these days and you have tons of options. Have fun with it and don't overthink things.
You should be good to go! For a newbie-friendly experience, I recommend trying Linux Mint. It's a popular choice and won't give you too many headaches. If you want something lighter, Debian is also a great option. Your dad might just be thinking back to the days when Linux installations felt like rocket science. It’s way easier now!
I've set up Linux on a bunch of old Inspiron models and it usually goes smoothly. Most distros handle it just fine, so go for it! You're going to be pleasantly surprised.
Plus, Dell laptops actually work really well with Linux!

Debian XFCE would run super smoothly on your laptop, for sure!
