I received a 16GB RAM stick as a gift, and while it matches the correct speed and is compatible with my motherboard, I'm new to computer components and adding them. I've read that dual channel configurations are better for gaming performance. If I switch out my two 4GB sticks for the single 16GB stick, will that be a downgrade? Also, which memory slot should I use if I'm only installing one stick?

It really depends on your motherboard. If you have a 4-slot board, you could put the 16GB in one channel and keep the 2x4GB sticks in another. This way, you'll get partial dual channel performance, which is better than just using one 16GB stick alone.

My motherboard is an ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, so I can do that! Honestly, it’s all a bit overwhelming since I just got out of the hospital, but thanks a ton for the help!
