I'm a first-year IT student taking a beginner programming module that focuses on flowcharts and pseudocode rather than a specific programming language. The lecturer's quiz questions present entire programs in tightly packed paragraphs with little or no indentation. This makes it difficult to tell where loops begin and end, especially when nested loops, do-while loops, and conditional statements are involved. Pseudocode itself seems reasonable for the course, but the formatting makes the logic unnecessarily hard to follow. Should I raise this with the lecturer, or is struggling with messy pseudocode considered part of learning programming?

Pseudocode is completely normal in an introductory programming course, but it still needs to be readable. Indentation, line breaks, and clear markers for the start and end of loops are important because they show the structure of the algorithm. Poor formatting isn't a useful substitute for real-world experience; professional code is normally formatted precisely to make it maintainable. I'd contact the lecturer first and explain that the lack of formatting is making it hard to identify nested blocks and loop boundaries.
The examples can still be worked out by carefully marking each opening and closing construct. For every loop, write down its condition and matching end statement, then trace the variables one iteration at a time. That said, needing a workaround doesn't make the presentation good. Learning to interpret unfamiliar code is useful, but intentionally presenting beginner exercises as one giant paragraph is not the same as teaching real-world debugging.
Before escalating it to the university, ask the lecturer directly whether the original material was supposed to have indentation or line breaks. Sometimes formatting gets lost when content is copied into quiz software, although it could also simply be laziness. If several students are confused, mention that as well. Course feedback or a formal complaint makes more sense if the issue continues after you've raised it.
