I've been teaching myself web development for about seven months and have already built real layouts with Flexbox. I understand concepts like centering elements, using align-items, and arranging items in rows or columns, but after a few weeks I often end up rereading the same documentation as if I've never seen it before.
Most spaced-repetition advice is aimed at facts such as vocabulary or anatomy. Programming feels different because I don't want to memorize every CSS property. I want to develop the instinct to recognize when Flexbox or Grid is the right tool and understand the general approach, even if I still look up exact syntax.
Is it worth deliberately reviewing Flexbox, or is forgetting details and checking documentation simply a normal part of programming? I'm not sure whether I'm addressing a real learning problem or worrying unnecessarily.

Three weeks is enough time to forget something you haven’t used much yet. Try using Flexbox in your own projects several times a week, and explain your layout decisions out loud or to someone else. Those repeated experiences give the concepts more context than simply rereading a reference page.
Forgetting exact syntax is completely normal, and documentation exists for that reason. The more important goal is remembering what Flexbox and Grid are good for and recognizing the common layout patterns. Keep practicing by building different layouts rather than trying to memorize the entire specification.
Think of it like multiplication tables: repeated use turns frequently needed patterns into instinct. You may still need to check less-common syntax, but that doesn’t mean you’re failing. Aim for recognition and problem-solving first; memorization will follow naturally for the parts you use often.
The best way to make it stick is repetition combined with variation. Build several small interfaces that use Flexbox in different ways: navigation bars, card rows, centered panels, responsive columns, and nested layouts. Looking things up while you work is fine; repeated use will gradually make the common patterns automatic.
You should eventually know the basic behavior of row versus column and have a general feel for justify-content and align-items with values like start, center, and end. You don’t need every property memorized, but those fundamentals become familiar through building more layouts.
