Is It Normal to Struggle with UI Design as a Frontend Developer?

I'm currently diving into MERN stack development and have grasped the frontend side well enough to handle logic and component design when imitating existing websites. However, I hit a wall when I try to create designs completely from scratch. I often feel like I fail as a UI designer. Is this a common experience among developers?

You're definitely not alone! UI/UX design is a specialized skill that many developers find tough, which is why we often collaborate with designers. It's a whole different ballgame, and that's why it can feel so challenging to nail it on your own.

As a UX designer, I can tell you that the front end represents a different layer than the technical side. If you ever feel lost with design choices, try referring to some basic design principles. They can help steer you in the right direction and make your designs feel more cohesive.

That's completely normal! UI design is typically handled by designers for a good reason. If you're struggling, you can use tools or resources to help out, like LLMs or websites for design inspiration. Just take cues from designs you like and tweak them to fit your style.

Totally get where you're coming from! A lot of us prefer backend work for a reason. I usually end up with basic designs from Tailwind or Bootstrap, which can get a bit dull. It's just not my strong suit, and that's perfectly okay!

Itโs pretty unusual for developers to take on full design responsibilities unless youโre in small freelance projects. Think of it this way: your role is about bringing that designer's vision to life, not necessarily being the designer yourself!
