Is it okay to create clones of existing websites for my portfolio?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of building my portfolio to help with my job search next year. I've been struggling a bit with finding the right fonts, color schemes, and overall styling for the sites I'm creating. My background is more in development, so I'm not as confident in the design aspect. I'm wondering, if I were to remake existing websites and hand-code them myself, would potential employers look down on that? Right now, I'm working on an e-commerce site and could use some advice on how to make my portfolio stand out. Thanks!

It's totally fine to remake websites for your portfolio, especially since you're focusing on the development side. Many employers care more about your coding skills than your design expertise. Just be sure to mention that these are remakes and highlight what you specifically contributed. For styling, consider using UI kits like Bootstrap or Material-UI to save time and create a polished look.

I appreciate the suggestion about UI kits! I’ve never heard of them before but I’ll definitely check them out!
