Is it practical to host several small projects on one VPS?

I've built a few small personal projects over the past couple of years. One is currently hosted on Vercel, another runs on Render, and a third is mostly unused. I'm considering renting a single VPS in the $5โ€“10/month range and moving the projects there to simplify things and reduce costs. Is consolidating several small projects on one VPS a sensible approach, and what should I watch out for?

Yes, it can work very well for small projects and is often cheaper and easier to manage than several separate platforms. The main tradeoff is that one server becomes a shared point of failure, so donโ€™t expect perfect uptime. Keep regular backups somewhere outside the VPS, such as object storage, and make sure you can restore them.

There are plenty of inexpensive providers, so compare location, bandwidth, storage, backup options, and support rather than focusing only on the monthly price. A basic Linux VPS should be sufficient for lightweight applications. Tools such as a control panel or a simple SSH-based deployment workflow can help, but Kubernetes or k3s is probably unnecessary unless you specifically want to learn it or expect to add multiple machines later.

A single VPS is a reasonable setup, but isolate the applications from one another. Containers with Docker Compose are usually enough for a few small services, along with a reverse proxy for routing different domains. Keep the operating system and dependencies updated, limit exposed ports, and monitor disk space and memory. If one project becomes important or resource-heavy, move it to its own host later.

MellowOrbit42: That sounds more manageable than trying to run a full cluster. I mainly want simpler deployments and separate domains without making the setup too complicated.
