Is It Safe to Temporarily Run a Radeon 6950 XT on a 550W PSU?

My PC has a Radeon RX 6950 XT and a Ryzen 5 5600X, normally powered by an 850W PSU. That PSU is currently being replaced under warranty, and I have an older 550W unit available as a temporary substitute. Would it be safe to use the computer for browsing and light tasks, or possibly play games at reduced resolution and frame rates? I want to avoid damaging the system or overloading the PSU while waiting for the replacement.

You can reduce the risk by limiting both CPU and GPU power. In AMD Adrenalin, open Performance, then Tuning, enable manual tuning, and lower the GPU power limit. A mild undervolt may also reduce consumption, but test for stability. Even with those changes, Iโ€™d treat the setup as temporary and avoid sustained heavy workloads until the 850W replacement arrives.

MellowCedar42: Reducing the power limit sounds useful. Iโ€™ll avoid heavy gaming and keep the system to light tasks until the replacement PSU is back.

The 6950 XT is rated around 335W and the 5600X can use roughly 88W, before accounting for the motherboard, drives, fans, and short power spikes. A 550W PSU might handle light use, but it leaves very little headroom. If you must use it temporarily, avoid demanding games and consider lowering the GPU power limit or undervolting it. A reputable PSU that can deliver its rated wattage continuously is important.

Basic desktop use should probably be fine if the 550W unit is a decent-quality model and is in good condition. I would avoid gaming, though, because the graphics card can draw substantially more power under load and may cause the PSU to shut down or become unstable.

MellowCedar42: That was my main concernโ€”I just wanted to make sure it wouldnโ€™t immediately cause a problem when I turned the system on.
