Is It Worth Upgrading From a Ryzen 7 5700X to AM5 for the Long Term?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 5700X with 48GB of DDR4-3600 CL16 memory and a Radeon RX 7700 XT. The 5700X has been great, but I'm worried it may start holding back newer games and future upgrades. There isn't one specific game causing problems right now, and I play at 1440p around 75 FPS, but I'm considering upgrading proactively.

A Ryzen 7 5800X3D costs roughly $400 or more in my region, and the 5700X3D is no longer readily available. I've also considered the 5500X3D, although it seems like a downgrade in core count and specifications despite its extra cache. Moving to AM5 would mean buying a new CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. RAM is especially expensive here: even 8GB of basic memory costs around $150–200, while an 8GB 6000 MT/s module can cost $200–250.

Would it make more sense to stay on AM4 and look for an X3D processor, or should I save up for a full AM5 upgrade for better long-term support? I'd prefer not to spend more than necessary, especially since selling my current parts would only cover a small portion of the upgrade cost.

AM5 is the better long-term platform, but only if you can afford the complete platform change without compromising the rest of the build. You would want a suitable motherboard, a current six- or eight-core processor, and a matched 2x16GB DDR5 kit rather than a single 8GB stick. Since DDR5 prices are unusually high where you live, waiting for better pricing may be wiser than upgrading simply because the platform is newer.

There isn’t enough evidence that you need to upgrade yet. At 1440p with an RX 7700 XT, the GPU is often going to be the limiting part, and a 5700X should still handle 75 FPS in most games. Check your CPU and GPU utilization, frame-time graphs, and the specific games or performance targets that are bothering you before spending money.

The main missing information is your actual budget and performance target. ‘Future-proofing’ is difficult because prices and game requirements change, and buying early does not guarantee a better deal. Monitor which component reaches high usage while gaming; if the GPU is at nearly full utilization, a CPU upgrade will not noticeably improve performance. If the CPU is consistently maxed or causing stutters, then an X3D AM4 chip or a properly planned AM5 build becomes easier to justify.

The 5500X3D can look worse than the 5700X on paper because it has fewer cores, but its much larger 3D cache can improve gaming performance in CPU-limited situations. It isn’t automatically an upgrade, though. It makes sense only if it is substantially cheaper than other options and your games benefit from the extra cache; otherwise it may be a lateral move.

Exactly. The extra cache can help minimum FPS and CPU-heavy games, but losing two cores means it is not a universal improvement over the 5700X.

If you want the best value, staying on AM4 is probably the sensible choice. A reasonably priced 5700X3D or 5800X3D would let you keep your motherboard and DDR4 memory, but paying a premium for either one is hard to justify. If those chips cost close to a new AM5 platform in your region, skip them and save for AM5 instead.
