Hey everyone! I need some advice on upgrading the CPU for my Unraid server, which currently has a Ryzen 7 1700X. I run quite a few demanding tasks, including media serving for up to three users in 1080p, Nextcloud, freecad, Octoprint, and Home Assistant as a VM, among others. I'm also looking to run a Windows 11 VM for software that's not Linux-friendly. My current setup struggles to handle everything, especially when I try running the Windows VM, so I'm considering an upgrade. The Ryzen 7 5800X is priced around 150€, while the Ryzen 9 5950X is about 300€. Given the significant price difference, I'm wondering if the extra cores and performance of the 5950X are worth it. Also, my motherboard is an Asus Prime X370-Pro and it has been updated to support the 5800X. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You might want to look into used Ryzen 3950X prices, as it has the same 16 cores as the 5950X but might be cheaper. Given all those docker tasks, more cores could really help your performance. Just a suggestion, check your local market for deals!
Ever thought about the Ryzen 5900XT? It’s a slightly lower-spec option than the 5950X, but it could be perfect for server tasks and possibly available for around the same price. Just some food for thought!
Yeah, I recently upgraded to a 5900XT and it performs really well! More cores will definitely benefit you given your usage. You could also sell your old CPU and recover part of the new chip's cost.
Is your motherboard ready for the 5800X? Also, can it handle the power needs of the 5950X? It's worth checking to ensure your setup can support the upgrade, especially with the extra cores that draw more power.
Yes, I updated the BIOS for compatibility with the 5800X. As for power, I think my PSU can manage the extra TDP, but is there anything else I should consider?

Sounds promising, but I’m not really able to find one at a decent price around here.
