I currently have an i5-9600K, 32 GB of DDR4-3000 memory, and an RX 6650 XT. I'm planning an upgrade mainly for VR, but I'd also like strong performance in modern AAA games at 1440p and above 60 FPS.
My understanding is that 32 GB of RAM is still sufficient, but my current CPU may limit a newer graphics card. I'm considering a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about €330 and reusing my existing memory. Moving to DDR5 would add roughly €450–500 for a 32 GB kit, and I'm not sure the performance increase would justify that cost.
For the GPU, I'm considering an RX 9060 XT 8 GB at around €440 or an RX 9070 XT 16 GB at about €760. I'm also open to the regular RX 9070 or a 16 GB version of the 9060 XT. For VR and 1440p gaming, would the more expensive card provide a meaningful long-term benefit?

A DDR4-compatible 14th-generation Intel system is also worth considering. CPUs such as the 14600K, 14700, or 14700K can deliver a large improvement over the 9600K without requiring DDR5. Just make sure the motherboard has a current BIOS and decent power delivery, especially with the higher-end chips.
The 5800X3D remains an excellent gaming processor, but it’s best value when upgrading an existing AM4 system. Since you need a new motherboard regardless, compare the total CPU-and-board price rather than the processor price alone.
DDR4 itself is still perfectly capable. In most games, moving to DDR5 would provide a relatively small improvement compared with spending that money on the CPU or GPU. A good DDR4-3200 or faster kit is fine, and your current 32 GB capacity is adequate.
The main downside is upgrade path: a new DDR4 platform will be close to the end of its upgrade options. That’s not necessarily a problem if you intend to keep the system for several years, but DDR5 gives you a newer platform and more future CPU choices. For your stated budget, though, a stronger GPU is likely to make a more noticeable difference.
Keeping the DDR4 setup can make sense, especially if you choose a CPU and motherboard that support it. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a major gaming upgrade, but it only makes financial sense if you already have an AM4 motherboard; you’ll need a new board either way.
An Intel i5-14600K or 14600KF with a DDR4-compatible motherboard is another option. It performs similarly to the 5800X3D in games, usually costs less, and is considerably faster in heavily threaded workloads. If you choose 14th-generation Intel, update the motherboard BIOS and use the recommended power settings to avoid the older voltage-related stability issues.
For VR, I’d avoid an 8 GB graphics card. The RX 9070 or 9070 XT, both with 16 GB, would be much more suitable. The regular 9070 is only around 10% slower, uses less power, and may offer better value, while the XT is worth considering if the price difference is small and you want the extra headroom.
For VR, put as much of the budget as possible toward the GPU. A graphics card has to render two views at high resolution, and VRAM capacity can become a problem sooner than it does in ordinary 1440p gaming.
I would choose at least a 16 GB card. The RX 9060 XT 16 GB could work if you’re targeting around 60 FPS and want to control costs, but the RX 9070 is a much stronger pairing for demanding VR and AAA games. The 9070 XT gives you more performance, but whether it’s worth it depends on the local price gap.
The RX 9070 XT is a substantial step up from the 9060-class cards and is a strong high-end option for 1440p and VR. If the regular RX 9070 is roughly €70–100 cheaper, it may be the better value because it keeps the same 16 GB VRAM while using less power.
If you can comfortably afford the XT and want to keep the card longer, the extra performance is reasonable for VR. I would not choose the 8 GB model for this build, since newer games and higher-resolution VR headsets can put considerable pressure on VRAM.

Thanks, several people have suggested the 14600K, so I’ll compare it with the 5800X3D. I don’t really run demanding applications outside gaming, but the extra performance would still be useful. I’m also leaning toward the 9070 or 9070 XT because of the VRAM and the relatively small price difference in my area.
