Is Learning C and C++ for Embedded Systems Useful for Learning Other Languages?

I'm considering learning C and C++ through embedded systems and electronics, but I'm also interested in software development more broadly. Do these languages provide a useful, transferable foundation for picking up languages such as Python, Java, or others? I'd especially like to hear from people who started with C or C++ and later moved into different areas of programming.

C++ was my first serious language, and it helped me build a solid understanding of programming fundamentals. Just keep in mind that no language is a shortcut to mastering software development: youโ€™ll still need to learn the conventions, libraries, tools, and design patterns of each new language or platform.

Yes, C and C++ can give you a strong foundation. Youโ€™ll get familiar with memory, pointers, data structures, compilation, and how programs interact with the machine. Those concepts can make higher-level languages easier to understand, even though those languages hide much of the underlying detail.

The skills are transferable, but the biggest benefit comes from learning programming itself rather than choosing one particular language. C, Python, Java, and other languages all teach different habits and have their own ecosystems, so learning embedded programming is worthwhile if you genuinely want to work with hardwareโ€”not simply because you expect it to make every other field effortless.

Starting with C or C++ can make languages like Python feel relatively approachable because you already understand core programming ideas. The reverse path may require more adjustment when you eventually deal with manual memory management, types, compilation, and lower-level behavior. That said, functional languages and other very different programming styles may still introduce concepts you wonโ€™t encounter in C.
